April ArtWalk Happenings

Newburyport’s 2013 ArtWalk Weekends premiere Saturday April 20st and Sunday April 21nd.

Newburyport, a small yet vibrant New England city, is a magnet for arts activities on the North Shore with an abundance of art galleries and artists’ studios. The 2013 ArtWalk Gallery Guide directs walkers along main streets and narrow lanes surrounded by historic architecture and views of the Merrimac River and the ocean. It is a time when galleries and studios host of variety of free activities, including but not limited to, live music, art demonstrations, wine and cheese receptions and more. Be sure to read below to learn about what each participating gallery is offering during this first artwalk...

Firehouse Gallery, Market Square, Firehouse Center for the Arts

Susan Spellman, a local children's book illustrator and fine artist, presents, "Dancers," a solo exhibit featuring dance in motion through the use of intentional brushstrokes, carefully placed colors, as well as very deep connection to the work. Upstairs at the Firehouse, "April & Art," displays the varied work of seven local artists celebrating the artistic undercurrents of the seaside community.

New work by Mary Arthur Pollack and guest artist, Maria Malatesta, will be on view at Indigo Artist Studio for the Newburyport Artwalk Weekend. The colors and light of nature inspire Maria's large, expressive paintings. Warm textures and patterns of tapestries and frescoes from recent travels to Italy inform the new monotypes of Mary Arthur Pollack. The public is invited to join the artists from 12-5pm on Saturday and Sunday for the Studio Open House. Refreshments will be served. Studio is handicapped accessible. Please call (978) 500-0546 for more information.

We have added many new landscape images of Newburyport & Plum Island to the gallery by local photographer, Greg Nikas. Greg began his photographic career as a landscape photographer and shows his work exclusively at Sweethaven Gallery.

This year, Sweethaven Gallery is very excited to have local painter, Alan Bull, exhibiting his work at the gallery during all four ArtWalk weekends. While primarily known for his paintings of old trucks, Alan also produces monotypes, large scale landscape oils and delicately painted nudes on birch panel. Alan also regularly offers classes in drawing and painting for teens and adults at his Newburyport studio. For more info, visit www.alanbull.com.

Back by popular demand is local weaver, Phyllis Sher, of PhlissDesigns. As an alumnus of The Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC, with a degree in textile design, Phyllis' love of weaving evolved quite naturally. Primarily weaving with bamboo, alpaca, cotton, and organic cotton fibers, her amazing color sense enhances the visual appeal of each piece of cloth she designs on the loom. On display will be her colorful Spring scarves and table runners. Her work will be featured in the gallery throughout the year. For more info, Phyllis can be reached at phyllis.sher@comcast.net or 617-680-3151.

As a special treat for the first ArtWalk, local fiddle player, Ann Federowicz, will be playing 3 - 5 PM on Sunday April 21st. Ann grew up in Vestal, NY. After being trained classically from 10 years of age, she went west to Colorado where she honed her fiddle skills in Bluegrass and Irish music. She loves the sereneness, depth and uplifting tones of Irish music and has studied at the University of Limerick, Ireland. She will be playing original music plus Celtic airs, jigs and reels that will soothe your soul. By day, Ann is a state licensed and board certified acupuncturist at Rivers of Wellness Acupuncture at 54 Pleasant Street, Newburyport, and can be reached at ann@riversofwellness.com or 603-760-8360.

Valeries Gallery, 26 State Street

Valerie's Gallery is hosting a special ArtWalk event with four gallery artists in attendance on Saturday April 20th from 3-7pm. Meet the artists, ask questions, and learn more about the art and craft they create.

We'll be featuring the work of Paul Beauregard and his carved birds. Paul Beauregard is a third generation woodworker.  A cabinet maker by trade, Mr. Beauregard’s love of and involvement with caged birds for 25 years was replaced with carving their images in wood.
