October 15th ArtWalk...Saturday!

The LAST Newburyport ARTWALK of 2011 happens on Saturday October 15 from 3 – 7 PM. Eighteen galleries located in or near downtown Newburyport participate in this free introduction to the visual arts in Newburyport. This year’s three previous Artwalks saw an increase in participating galleries and an increase in attendance, despite weather, competing events and the introduction of parking fees in downtown Newburyport. Gallery Members are considering an increase in scheduled Artwalks in 2012.

Now, 2011, is the right time to add to an existing collection or to begin a personal collection of art. The Artwalk galleries represent a broad spectrum of art and media. Lush landscapes, seascapes, abstracts, portraits, photography, monoprints, ink, oil, watercolor, pastel, and collage by area artists are all on display and for sale. Art buyers look for this opportunity to view new artists and new works and for artists whose work may be new or undervalued, art which will increase in value and at the same time provide enjoyment for the owner. Artwalks are an excellent opportunity to meet artists and Gallery representatives who can discuss the art on view and add to the viewer’s appreciation of an artist’s work.

The October 15 Artwalk finds Newburyport alive with nature’s Autumn-hued palette. The streets of antique houses and brick-paved walks are shaded by large old trees with gold and scarlet foliage in mid-October. The map-guided walk from gallery to gallery takes you through the Market Square area, saved from destruction decades ago and now reflecting centuries of Newburyport’s history and commerce. There are galleries located on residential streets as well and visitors will pass restored small houses with ornate fences and gardens and large homes reflecting Newburyport’s 17th,18th and 19th century architecture.

Walsingham Gallery

Featuring a painting demonstration by Jim Karlovich, reception of wine and cheese, and raffle to win a framed, limited edition Giclee signed by the artist. “Purple Irises,” valued at $800, will be raffled off to a winner drawn at random from the names of those who sign the gallery’s guestbook during the demonstration, 1-5pm, on ArtWalk, October 15th.

Bridge Gallery

Featured Artist, Tony Cerra, has captured the colors of Autumn for an exhibit of his landscapes. Working primarily in oils and on site, Cerra’s work masterfully displays the complexity of light and shadows. His paintings virtually glow as they convey the mood and emotion of time and place. “Painting is a passion of mine, and in what better season than Autumn do you find natures beauty so inspiring”.

Connor Summers Gallery

Featuring slate carvings by Newbury sculptor Michael Updike. Among the beautifully carved images are renderings of birds and fish. They are a must see. Also on exhibit are paintings by Catherine Connor, Jim Mickelson, and Jon Kodwyck.

Indigo Artist Studio

A variety of framed and unframed work is available as well as commissions. Refreshments will be served during the ArtWalk. The artists will be available to demonstrate or answer any questions regarding their work. The studio will be open from 11-7 on October 15.

Firehouse Gallery's Firehouse Center for the Arts, Market Square

Daniel Gottsegen’s one-man show features large canvases filled light and movement. He juxtaposes scenes and abstracts elements of landscapes in images that reflect New England. The Firehouse Gallery will be open Saturday October 15 from 12 noon – 6:30 PM. Reception 3 – 5pm.

Sommersby Landing Sculpture Park

Waterfront Park at the west end of the boardwalk next to the Black Cow Tap and Grill. Featuring its 8th annual year-long exhibit of large, outdoor, contemporary sculptures from New England artists. Always open.
Public transportation is available. The MBTA’s Newburyport station is located at the southern end of the new Rail Trail, a 1-mile scenic walk to Newburyport’s riverfront. Two galleries are located less than half a mile from the station. A taxi service is available at the train station or call 978-499-9990. Paid-parking lots are located near Market Square and there is convenient on-street parking throughout the downtown area.

"TH/ink", a delightful and thought-provoking exhibit of Quill Pen and Ink drawings by Bridge Gallery Artist Elaine Asplind Russell, promises to engage and trigger the viewer’s imagination.

Drawing with Quill Dip Pen and Ink is a delicate and time consuming process. Each piece takes considerable time to complete due to the creative energy and intricate artistry required. Russell does not typically sketch the image prior to execution, rather she creates each work as she is inspired.

A resident of Groveland, Russell is a recipient of Newburyport Art Association’s Sam Sargent Award for Drawing, and the Haverhill Arts Association Best of Other Media Award. She has been published in "Dark Horse Literary Magazine", and she has exhibited her original drawings throughout New England. The Artist is an exhibiting member of Newburyport Art Association and Greater Haverhill Art Association, and is represented by Bridge Gallery in Newburyport and Angles and Art in Haverhill.

"TH/ink" will be on exhibit from August 31st throughout the month of September. The public is invited to an Artist Reception on Saturday, September 10th, 2011 from 6 to 9pm with entertainment provided by Classical Guitarist Stephen Hochbrunn. Artist Demonstrations will take place every Wednesday in September.

The Alan Bull Studio will be showing "Monotypes, Marshes and Music: New Paintings and Prints" featuring recent truck paintings, marsh scenes and several works from Alan's new musician series. The Walsingham Gallery's Artist in Session Series 2011 presents a watercolor demonstration by artist William E. Duke, Saturday August 20th, 1-5pm. Living and painting on the North Shore, Bill derives both his subject matter and inspiration from the environmental beauty of the region, and in particular, the marshlands.

Scheduled May-October, the Artist in Session series provides the opportunity to catch a rare glimpse into the creative process as the artist demonstrates their personal techniques in our intimate gallery setting.

Printmaker, Matthew Smith, will be at Valerie's Gallery August 20 from 3-5pm to answer questions about his artwork, his process as well as show you his work. A former commercial fisherman, Matthew's favorite subjects are wildlife and nature. He continually experiments with etchings and layering colors and the results are beautiful.

Sweethhaven Studio & Gallery features landscapes of Newburyport & Plum Island by local photographer, Greg Nikas. For this ArtWalk, we have added a new selection of 4 1/2" x 3" prints in 8" x 10" mats for easy framing. We have also added a new image, "Super Moon" over Plum Island and Joppa Flats photographed this past March from the boat ramp at the sea wall on Water Street. We will be open from 10-7pm and will be serving light refreshments starting at 3pm.

Indigo Artist Studio will feature “No Boundaries” for their August ArtWalk. The work created by studio artists, Mary Arthur Pollak and Lillian Coolidge, pushes place and space to an abstract level. Reflections, tide pools, marsh and fields are referenced in oil paintings, monotype and mixed media pieces. A variety of framed and unframed work are available as well as commission inquiries. The studio will be open from 11-7 on August 20 2011. Refreshments served. Artists are available to demonstrate or answer questions.

Studio 54 on State Street will feature local artists, Heather Karp, Susan Spellman, Karen Jones, Cara Gonier, and Lisa Bohnwagner. All five artists use color in very intense ways to evoke direct emotions from viewers. "Six Squared" has been extended through August due to its popularity!!! During the ArtWalk, Kevin Johnson, a local acoustic guitarist, will be playing at the studio from 5-7 with light refreshments served.

The Connor Summers Gallery continues with its summer exhibit for 2011. Hand painted and cut bird sculptures are also on exhibit as well as beautiful original paintings by artist and owner, Cathy Connor. Connor Summers Gallery is at 48 Market Street Newburyport MA.

The Newburyport Ten, a group of local plein air artists, will be hosting a reception August 20th from 7-9pm at the Newburyport Art Association as part of their show, "Fresh Air: Landscape Paintings." The show runs from August 15-28.

Newburyport ARTWALK returns JUNE 25th with eighteen galleries participating in this free community event. For a self-guided tour, pick up a map at any of the participating galleries as well as the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce. Newburyport is a historic, seaport destination filled with beautiful shops, restaurants and amazing outdoor spaces! It is home to a large number of art galleries and artists’ studios, all of which play an important role in the overall vibrancy of the city. ArtWalk is a perfect example of Newburyport at its best, providing a relaxing stroll through the different galleries and art exhibits.

The Connor Summers Gallery at 48 Market Street celebrates summer with its annual "Land, Sea, and In-Between" show featuring new landscapes by Catherine Connor as well as vintage works by North Shore artist, James Mickelson. The gallery is a short three-block walk west of downtown.
Bridge Gallery presents “All Things Bright & Beautiful” featuring the works of artist, Karla K. Cook, from June 1-27, 2011. Karla believes that animals enhance our humanity and help us appreciate the beauty of the world around us. Cook will be doing a free pet portrait demonstration at 3pm on June 25th. Local blues artists, Paul Prue and Mark Hayden, will be playing live on Saturday, June 25 from 4-7pm.
Indigo Artist Studio artists will be available during the ArtWalk to demonstrate and discuss the process of their mediums. The studio houses a monotype press used to create one of a kind prints and a variety of printing processes including solar plate etching, chine colle, and carborundum to name a few. Mixed mediums including encaustic, collage, and other painting mediums are also explored at the studio by Mary Arthur Pollak. Oil painting methods, especially oil pigment sticks are the focus of artist, Lillian Coolidge and can be seen in small to large panels depicting landscapes.
Alan Bull's studio will be hosting a student show featuring selections from his adult painting, drawing and figure drawing classes as well as his teen drawing class. He will also be showing many of his own drawings and paintings.
Newburyport Art Association's featured artist, Judith Monteferrante, will be having a show during the artwalk as well as the Abstract Painting Interest Group Show.
Heather Karp's gallery, Studio 54, presents "Six Squared," in the main gallery; a show of thirty-six 6"x6" acrylic wood block paintings by abstract artist, Cara Gonier. Cara will be giving a free demonstration of her process at 3:30pm. Robin Thornhill's ethereal landscapes are also on display. Wine and cheese reception from 3-6pm.
The Churchill Gallery features the work of outstanding local, regional and national talents offering a distinctive portfolio of original Fine Art. Our June ArtWalk exhibition includes new works by gallery artists and introduces marine watercolorist extraordinaire Steven Lush.
Firehouse Gallery: Artist, Susan Kneeland's beach scenes mirror this season of strolls along the sand, playtime in the breaking surf and all that beautiful Newburyport has to offer. During the Artwalk, Susan will be in the gallery from 3-4pm speaking about the prices artists ask for their work and answering questions about what goes into creating art for a living.
The Walsingham Gallery's Artist In Session series welcomes Grant Hacking on June 25th. Having lived in South Africa for the first 25 years of his life, Grant Hacking became a keen observer of nature. From his extensive travels across the African landscape, Grant eagerly absorbed the visual details of his exotic surroundings. His vivid memories of his home land are an important resource for his wildlife paintings and his inspiration. Mr. Hacking will be demonstrating how he develops a new wildlife painting using oils on canvas. Enjoy meeting Grant, refreshments and viewing his most recent work on display.
Valerie's Gallery welcomes David Magdalenski, an Amesbury artist, for the June artwalk. He will be giving a free painting demonstration and taking questions from 3-5pm.

The first of four Newburyport ARTWALKs returns April 16th with eighteen galleries participating in this free community event. For a more directed tour, gather at Market Square in front of the Firehouse Center for the Arts at 3PM or 4PM for a one-hour long guided tour. The tour includes the Somerby's Landing Sculpture Park, Inn Street Market Place, as well as galleries.

Special Artist Demonstrations, Live Music, and Gallery Information:

Amy Scott will be giving a demonstration at 4:00pm at the Firehouse Gallery in Market Square.
Robin Thornhill, an award-winning oil painter, will give a painting demonstration at 4:30pm at Studio 54 on State Street. Other artists include owner and artist, Heather Karp, as well as Cara Gonier, and Janet Macleod. Kevin Johnson is playing live acoustic guitar from 6:00-7:00pm.
Donna Ricci & John Tavano will play classic guitar duets at the Bridge Gallery, 1 R Water Street, from 3:00-5:00pm.
Lepore Fine Arts is in a new location at 37 Liberty Street. The new space is a collaboration with furniture designers, Fox Brothers Studio and EC Modern, as well as several glassmakers.
Indigo Artist Studio welcomes spring with new works titled "Outside In," a collection of abstract landscapes, watery reflections, and contemplative green space by local artists Mary Arthur Pollak and Lillian Coolidge.
Chameleon starts the season with a collection of lively, thought provoking work by its diverse artists. Sara Demrow-Dent’s exquisite rendition of poppies, integrate delicately scribed poetry in graphite, defining the images from afar, bringing the viewer to a place of intimacy when viewed up close. Photographer Jeremy Barnard’s bold black and white images take us to a familiar time and place. Hanging are lush landscapes by Julia Purinton, Jeanette Griffith and Karen Kemp, whimsical wildlife by Tennessee artist Vicki Sawyer, ethereal photographs by Joan Kocak and much more.
Jim Conley, a well-known Newburyport silversmith and goldsmith, will be doing a jewelry-making demonstration from 3:00-6:00pm at Valerie's Gallery.
The Connor Summers Gallery at 48 Market Street is kicking off the new artwalk season with "April for Animals 2011." New paintings with corresponding handcut and handpainted animals by Cathy Connor are on display through June.
Alan Bull's studio will be featuring alternative process photography by Sara Connor, original paper cuttings and prints by Dylan Metrano, and works in several different media by Alan Bull.
The Walsingham Gallery is celebrating its new show Opening tomorow! April 16th through May 6th, “Spring View of Plum Island, ” a new series of oils inspired by Plum Island and Newburyport by artist, Beatrice Dauge.

Indigo Artist Studio will be offering art for you and your home this holiday season and will be open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11am-5pm from now until Christmas. The studio/gallery features painting, monotype and mixed media. Original art cards to large scale unique prints and paintings are available by studio artists, Mary Arthur Pollak and Lillian Coolidge.

Also available will be functional pottery by Melynn Allen, copper enamel jewelry by Lomas Design, and natural aromatic fragrances and soaps individually designed by Lillian Coolidge.

A special Open Studio weekend is planned for Dec. 3, 4 and 5 from 10am-5pm with an Opening Reception on Friday, Dec. 3 from 6pm-8pm. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.

Special ArtWalk on Oct. 23 -- Alan Bull and Jay Havighurst host tours

During the Oct. 23 ArtWalk, we'll be offering two special tours for the first time. By heading out with experienced and knowledgable guides, you'll learn more about the local art that is available in Newburyport and about the public outdoor sculpture.

1) Local artist Alan Bull will be a tour guide for galleries. Meet at 3 pm in Market Square at the ArtWalk A-frame sign. Tour will be approximately 90 minutes. Alan will lead discussions and answer questions. Alan is a well-known local artist who recently opened a studio on Graf Road.

2) Curator Jay Havighurst will lead an informational tour of the outdoor sculpture at Somerby's Landing (by the Black Cow restaurant/boardwalk). He will also introduce the new Clipper City Rail Trail which includes many new art pieces and sculptures. Meet Jay at 3:30 pm in Market Square at the ArtWalk A-frame sign. Jay is the curator for the Somerby's Landing Sculpture Park and has planned its rotating exhibits for the past few years.

Spirit of Newburyport Opens Downtown Studio

Dear Newburyport Art Lovers,

I've missed you!

It’s been two years since I have had the opportunity to exhibit my work in my own commercial studio. It’s been a long road back to this point but I’m happy to report that the Spirit of Newburyport lives! More importantly, I’m looking forward to the privilege and opportunity to talk and interact once again, with the people of the Greater Newburyport community of culture. I’d love to get re-acquainted with you and talk more about my work here in Newburyport in and outside of my studio, including my work with Transition Newburyport (www.transitionnewburyport.com) who has its foundation steeped in establishment of the ‘permanence of culture’ (permaculture) paradigm.

Even though I have not been personally exhibiting publicly over the past two years, I have continued to establish my Newburyport landmark and cityscape designs through other retail and gallery outlets including primarily, Sisters We Three on Pleasant Street, Newburyport Art Association (Christmas Show) and Fowels (greeting card line) on State Street. Out of these venues have risen several other projects including the use of my ‘Market Square Summer (2007)’ image as the book cover for Jean Doyle’s second edition of ‘Life in Newburyport 1950-1985’ (Due out in August). Another project to be launched publicly this spring/summer will be an ‘Aloft Marketing Group’ production using four of my Newburyport images for a cable commercial production for the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank.

Thank you to all who have contributed to keeping the Newburyport Artwalk alive and well and thanks for bringing me back on board. Look forward to seeing you and sharing more about the Spirit of Newburyport with all of you soonest!!!!

At Valerie's Gallery, we're excited that woodblock printmaker Matt Brown will be here doing a demonstration! Please join us between 4 and 7 pm. Matt makes his prints using the traditional Japanese hanga method, with a rope barren to rub the paper over multiple colored woodblocks. These are prints made by hand, without a press. Indigo Artist Studio Open House

Indigo Artist Studio, featuring monotypes, mixed media, and oils by studio artists, Mary Arthur Pollak and Lillian Coolidge, will be exhibiting a collection of new contemporary, abstract landscapes. The work by these local artists each with original but complementary styles, range in size and medium from miniature to large canvas and framed original prints.

The studio/gallery is a friendly space with the artists and their tools on hand to view and visit. Wine and cheese will be served during the ArtWalk. Stop by 53 Middle St. during the Newburyport ArtWalk on Saturday, April 10! We are located just two blocks from downtown and a block away from the Tannery. Holiday Saturdays at Indigo Artist Studio

Indigo Artist Studio will host Holiday Saturdays in December from
10-5 on December 5,12,19. The studio is working and gallery space
for artists, Mary Arthur Pollak and Lillian M. Coolidge, and features
monotype, mixed media, and oils in a variety of sizes and prices for
your home and gift giving.

Especially for the holidays are small monotype collages on canvas by
Mary Arthur Pollak. These pieces are monotype prints and other
collected textures, arranged with reminiscence of detail found in
ethnic and historical design. A broad collection of framed monotype
and mixed media landscapes and collages will also be available.

Also on exhibit are a selection of intimate landscapes in oil by
Lillian Coolidge. Her work depicts peaceful and beautiful spaces as
well as the power and raw beauty of nature. She describes her
paintings as meditations that offers the viewer a chance to rest and
wander within the space.

Indigo Artist Studio is at 53 Middle Street (just past Fair St.) in
Newburyport. To celebrate the holidays there will be a special
Artist's Reception on Dec. 5 from 4-6 with food and drink and open to the public. The studio is handicapped accessible and otherwise open by appointment or by chance. Call 978-500-0564 for information.

View an array of new works at Indigo Artist Studio during the ArtWalk in Newburyport on Saturday, October 24. Local studio artist, Mary Arthur Pollak, will be exhibiting a series of monotypes inspired from Maine shorelines and local marshes. Each unique print is printed on a Takach press in the studio. Indigo artist, Lillian Coolidge will be exhibiting a selection of abstract and representational oils including views of Tuscany and Vermont.

The lyrical paintings of Colorado artist Dan Schultz are characterized by their adept classical rendering, often featuring a figure in a bucolic landscape. Dan’s masterful use of light in his compositions infuse them with a sense of vitality and immediacy.

“My interest in making artwork that portrays people stems from my intrigue with people’s ability to create connections between each other. I have long enjoyed creating images of people whether it is a portrait, a child or a woman in a tranquil landscape. I believe that people can easily relate on a personal level to images of other people. And it seems like everyone can relate to an image of a landscape that reminds them of a favorite place. When I work outdoors — standing at my easel with the landscape before me — I feel a connection to the scene that I’m painting. And each time, I feel like I see more beauty in the world than I did the time before.”

Dan’s art has gained national recognition in a variety of subjects and media. Southwest Art Magazine featured his work in its September, 2004, “21 Under 31” article. He holds memberships in the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, and was selected as a Top 100 finalist in the 2001 Arts for the Parks national competition. He has participated in extensive gallery and museum exhibitions and has also received numerous awards for his plein air and studio paintings.

The Churchill Gallery has enjoyed the privilege of showing Dan’s remarkable work since the fall of 2007.

The subjects of Peter’s evocative paintings are inspired by memories of places discovered during a lifetime living in and exploring rural New England. Drawn to the ageless quality of the region’s iconic architecture, Peter’s timelss work captures the character, aura & sense of history of his beloved subject matter. He pushes the boundaries of color & design, often contrasting the simple geometry of any old structure against the smooth lines of the surrounding landscape.

Writes Peter, “I am fascinated on many levels when coming across a barn or seaside cottage. From an artist’s perspective I am interested in the nature of the architecture, how it sits within its landscape, color and light. From a personal perspective, I find myself often curious about the story of the building: who built it and why; the many people who have lived or worked in the building; how the landscape may have changed around the structure over the course of years. I find that the curiosity I have about the building intertwines with the creative process in my interpretation of the architecture and landscape in one image.”

Peter joined The Churchill Gallery’s roster of artists in the spring of 2008, and has rapidly developed a growing base of ardent collectors. His paintings hang in private and corporate collections nationwide.

Indigo Artist Studio, Monotype Demo, 6/27

Indigo Artist Studio presents tiny framed and unframed oil landscapes as well as bold abstract paintings by Lillian Coolidge and a large selection of monotypes and mixed media created by Mary Arthur Pollak. The ArtWalk featured event will be a demonstration of monotype printmaking methods from 2-3 pm by Ipswich artist, Mary Pollak. The demo will include a variety of techniques including additive, subtractive, stencils and chine colle’.

The studio is open from 11am through 7pm on Saturday, June 27 and is located at 53 Middle St., Newburyport (just past Fair St.) The studio open house is part of the Newburyport ArtWalk, stop #3. The public is invited throughout the day and snacks and drinks will be served during ArtWalk hours from 3-7pm.

The paintings of New Mexican artist Rodney Wood can be simultaneously beguiling and provocative. His dramatic works, both figurative and still life are sometimes described as Symbolic/Magic Realism or Emotional Realism. Rodney’s remarkable anthropomorphic series fascinates with its unlikely juxtapositions. In Paramour, an elegant zebra waits patiently on a Victorian sofa. The Hedonists depict three flamingoes bathing in a claw-footed tub & in The Maestro, an aristocratic lion sits proudly atop a grand piano.

Fascinated by mythology, the cross-cultural role of symbols and by metaphor, Rodney also draws upon his rich dream life in his creative process. With a remarkable technique that recalls that of the great Flemish Masters, Rodney has created a collection which is at once, timeless and cutting edge.

1. Bridge Gallery, 1R Water St. features emerging artist, Kristine Picard-Driscoll during the month of April. We are delighted to introduce Indiana painter John Reynolds to our roster of national talent. An architect by training, John decided to pursue his passion for painting – studying with noted American impressionist C.W. Mundy, as well as studying and teaching at the Indianapolis Art Center. Originally a portrait painter, John transferred his keen observation skills to the subject of farm animals, describing them firsthand in a painterly technique. His beautifully rendered compositions are imbued with a serene and poetic atmosphere.
